Fall + Cool Days = Bake Time!

Yeah, so I created my own equation because for some reason I see it that way. :) This morning I woke up to a cool 49 degree day filled with baking possibilities. One of the Powell family favorites is homemade granola. We have experimented over the years and have never made the same batch twice. There are times that that is a good thing and other times we spin our heads trying to remember what we did the time before. Today seemed like an excellent day to make Granola. I know Mark will be sad he wasn't home today to help me with it as his favorite part is mixing the wet and dry ingredients with his hands. YUCK. I hate that part, plus you heat the wet ingredients and it is hot. I think he likes it just so he can lick his fingers afterwards. I just pull out the clumps of yummy unbaked granola that sticks together. He usually swats my hand. :) If you're interested this is the recipe we use:

Granola

Dry Ingredients

1 canister Old fashioned Oats

2 cups Bran (optional)

1 1/2 Cups coconut

1 Cup brown sugar

1 TBS. Salt

*sunflower seeds, pecan, peanuts, walnuts, raisins, craisins...possibilities are endless, this is where you go crazy coming up with different combinations. I love using craisins and peanuts!

Wet Ingredients

1 Cup Veg. Oil

2/3 Cup water

1 TBS. Vanilla

1/3 Cup Honey

1/3-2/3 Cup Peanut Butter

Mix dry ingredients in super large bowl. Mix wet ingredients in large measuring cup or bowl. Microwave wet ingredients for 3 minutes on high. Stir. Mix wet and dry ingredients and put on 9x13 or 8x11 greased pans. Make it 1-2 inches deep. Bake on 300 degrees for about an hour, stirring every 15 minutes. This helps the granola to bake evenly. When it's done immediately pour yourself a bowl with ice cold milk. Oh YUM!!!

Since I now have craft ideas on my brain at all times and have been baking alot with Oats what neat project can I have Ella do with this?

Oooh, you should make a guessing game for her. Put in different objects -- a Little People person, a small felt doll, a cotton ball, a rubber ball, a large bolt, etc. -- and have her guess what she's grabbing. Or make it a matching game and show her an object, and have her reach in and find the one that matches it by the way it feels.

(Found you via your comment on Chasing Cheerios. I am SO IMPRESSED that you made your shelves and latch board yourself!!)

Okay Miss Meredith, I am going to try to make your granola! I have all the ingredients except bran. I have never bought bran, except for cereal like rasin bran, etc. What bran do you use and what section of the grocery store is it in? I can't wait to make it! Merry
